    The reduction in height and/or spread of the crown (the foliage bearing portions) of trees.  This is somewhat like weight reduction, allowing sunlight and air to penetrate through the tree's foliage, and providing less resistance to the elements.

    An alternative to topping is Thinning. Thinning trees will remove the unwanted branches and reduce the weight. It will also allow for light and air to penetrate through the tree.
